The Nets Won a Gritty Game against the Pistons 109-101

After an impressive start when Jeremy Lin, Brook Lopez and Sean Kilpatrick helped Brooklyn Nets to jump to a 38-30 lead in the 1st quarter and 16pts lead (71-55) by the 1st half, the Nets had to play without Jeremy in the 2nd half due to his left hamstring strain. The Piston cut to the 16pts lead down to 5 pts (103-98), Trevor Booker showed great defensive plays with a steal, a block, an offensive rebound to withhold the charge. Kilpatrick and Lopez provided the points to secure the much needed win.

The Nets improved to 2W-3L record with one day rest before hosting the Charlotte Hornets on Nov 4. It is unknown if Jeremy Lin can play. If not, the Nets are down 3 playmakers (Foye, Vasquez, Lin). Without the top 2 PGs, Isiah Whitehead and Sean Kilpatrick would have to fill in the role as the backup PG/playmakers.

Great plays

  • Lin finished the 1st half with 10pts/4asts/2rebs
  • Brook Lopez had a great 3-pt shooting game (4-8 from 3s) balanced with his strong inside game to finish with 34pts/11rebs/1ast. His rare ability to play inside out will make him even more valuable as the cornerstone of the Nets.
  • Sean Kilpatrick showed the excellent shooting, rebounding and playmaking to finish with 24pts/10rebs/3asts/2stls (3-3 from 3s)
  • Trevor Booker showed he is a defensive-stopper to finish with 4pts/4rebs/3asts/2stls/1blk

Jeremy strained his left hamstring before the end of the 1st half and did not play in the second half. Hopefully it was just a precaution as he came out in the 4th quarter to support his teammates from the bench

  • aggressiveplayer

Doing some research… I think Lin’s hamstring strain is mild, which means he should be out for about 2 weeks (just to be careful).

Mild hamstring strains (grade 1) will usually cause sudden pain and tenderness the back of your thigh. It may be painful to move your leg, but the strength of the muscle shouldn’t be affected.

Partial hamstring tears (grade 2) are usually more painful and tender. There may also be some swelling and bruising at the back of your thigh and you may have lost some strength in your leg.

Severe hamstring tears (grade 3) will usually be very painful, tender, swollen and bruised. There may have been a “popping” sensation at the time of the injury and you’ll be unable to use the affected leg.

A minor muscle pull or strain (grade 1) may take a few days to heal, whereas it could take weeks or months to recover from a muscle tear (grade 2 or 3).

not gonna lie this is depressing.

71 points on 71% shooting got me super hyped up. But JLin going down was an instant buzzkill. I really really REALLY hope he’ll be back quickly.

  • psalm234

    Kudos to Coach Atkinson.
Brook’s coming out 3 parties is balanced with his lethal inside attack.
His 34pts/11rebs/1ast in ONLY 29 min is SPECTACULAR!
If Brook continues his inside-out threat, he can be a Top 5 center in the NBA.
His inside plays are so valuable in playoff setting.

We don’t even know how many games he’ll be out. It’s not like an MKG season-ending injury. We don’t even know how long he’ll be out. Hopefully, not long.

  • Alaingrvis

i think minor pull is it

  • psalm234

    2 weeks for Grade 1? :[
Maybe Foye had a similar one that he missed 5 games so far

    Coach KA said doctor will let him know tomorrow. Hopefully one a 2-3 games :{

  • Elon Musk

anyone knows where can i watch the full game? freaking missed it 🙁

  • aggressiveplayer

We don’t know how many games he’ll be out but I’m thinking it’s a minimum of 1-2 weeks and could easily translate to much more than 3 games. Foye has the same injury as Lin–a mild strain on hamstring (I’m assuming mild but could be worse) and he hasn’t even played a single game in 5 games yet.. Only thing is that Lin is younger and hopefully he’ll heal faster.

  • MEL LIN

    or he doesn’t care.

  • ZcodeSportSystem.com

I hope and pray it is simply a minor pull that should keep him out of 2 games at best.

  • aggressiveplayer

Says online that it takes a few days to heal a grade 1, but I’m sure the Nets will be very precautionary and rest him more to make sure he doesn’t repeat the injury, hence two weeks.

Foye has the same injury. Hasn’t played a single game in 5 games yet.

  • CaliUSMC

Foye seems like a good dude. Always cheering for Lin.

  • Parent of Lots of Kids

I watched the game in person and was surprised at Booker’s low scoring. He was such an impact player. Seemed like he was involved in all the right moves. My 13 year old daughter totally felt the same way. JLin and Booker were all over the place- in a good way.

Just occurred to me when I was going to the game via public transportation, teams come to NYC and play the Knicks and Nets “back to back” but no need for them to change hotels or travel. Just right across a bridge. Didn’t the Pistons play the Knicks last night?

  • psalm234

Booker had such explosive impact crashing the boards for rebounds, blocks, steals.

You’re right. He’s very Lin-like to impact the game.
At times, he literally looked like mini-LeBron out there minus the dunks

He’s definitely the #1 Defensive Leader for the Nets.

  • zxcvb

Probably skips the Friday game and plays Tuesday. Luckily, there’s a 3-day rest between CHA and MIN.

  • orLinaryjoe

But Lin got forced out of the game with a hamstring injury with the Nets leading 64-55 and 2:14 left in the opening half. Coach Kenny Atkinson had no update on the injury’s severity, and wasn’t even sure how it happened. And while any lengthy Lin absence would be catastrophic — the Nets are already without Greivis Vasquez, Randy Foye and Caris LeVert — they had enough to hold on against Detroit (3-2).

“Obviously it’s tough to be there without J-Lin,” Lopez said. “We’re confident he’ll be all right.

“But it was great to see the guys stick together, playing within themselves and just trust each other. That’s where we’re going to find our true strength and that’s what’s going to make us a great team.”

The Nets, expected to be one of the NBA’s worst teams, likely would settle for good.

what i like on the game was the give and go between Brooks and Lin..it was so fluid and can also be the bread and butter for the two..Booker and lin has a good chemistry and skil had shown he’s ready to accept the true lesson of being a good basketball player. he’s gritty and hungry. other players on the nets needs to continue to work hard on their plays. nice win but great loss on the JLIn injury.

  • james brown

player that impact the game too aside from lin and Lopez

  • james brown

booker seems reluctant to receive yet the passes from Lin..maybe not so much play drawn for them but chemistry is fast building up!

  • Kwok Wai Lai

Trust Brook Lopez. He’s a franchise player and adjusting.
Lin and Brook haters just swarming and trying to break them before the chemistry starts to take shape. They’re so afraid. They couldn’t wait for this brand new team to mature. They are thinking of breaking up and taking no chance.

  • Vincent

atleast he got his double double

  • Rick James

thats why harden was traded…they couldn’t fit 2 ball hogs on one team. KD was ok since he doesn’t take that many shots, but WB and Harden were born ball hogs.

  • kauaiblue

Yes, i saw him limping… sigh

  • KHuang

Booker has NEVER been a double figure scorer in his entire NBA career.

He hustles all over the place because he does not have the raw talent to be a true scorer or stopper in the NBA.

As long as he sticks to his career role as a role player and doesn’t try to do too much, he could become the Eastern Conference version of Draymond Green (another untalented player who is a good team player).

I am nowhere as impressed with him as any other Lin fan is.

  • KHuang

I’ve been saying from the instant Lin signed with the Nets that Brook Lopez is THE BEST center in the NBA.

These kinds of games should have been NORMAL for Lopez since Day One of preseason!!!

  • KHuang

But Booker’s LACK of athleticism to get stops and scores earlier in the game far outweigh his rare positive contributions.

  • Dan cohen

Like what MDA said here about Lin:
MDA: “Jeremy is special. I love Jeremy. He’s a great kid. He knows how to play. Gotta give him the ball. I knew Kenny would. It’s his team. I’m happy for both of them….If he were to need any help, I would be there for him in a second.”
Reporter asked MDA his thought if Lin plays over 30min. MDA’s reply, “You can’t worry about that. Hopefully he has good luck…”

  • Dan cohen

but he is in Cleveland.. so of course he wants cleveland to win. so is jrsmpit

  • Dan cohen

  • Dan cohen

hahaha.. did you add the [knicks] there yourself or did the writer did.. hahaha it’s like a diss on the knicks..because they boring.hahahaha

  • Dan cohen

so it’s confirmed.. you need both lin and brook involve to win games.

  • Dan cohen

I was gonna say brooks more important because he is the inside presence, but he was there when the nets doesn’t have a very good pg and they were losing. So when lin was there himself, they don’t have inside presence and it was close.. So you do need both.

  • Kwok Wai Lai

Watching the first half carefully, you will come to the same conclusion as I do: it is a team effort and Detroit Pistons fought very hard and they just lost because key players like Booker, Lopez, Kilpatrick, Lin and almost all players stepped up. That includes Whitehead who had made some pretty plays in offense and defense.

If Lin is out in a few games, the Nets may lose a few more games now but in the long run the team chemistry gets to develop more. It will help the Nets later on.

  • CJSHYY

I think if Nets continues to play like last night they will be good. But during the time Lin is out… they sure will loss games…

  • Kwok Wai Lai

In fact this team easily lose the next few games without players like Booker, Lopez, Kilpatrick, Bogdanovi, Harris, and Scola too.

  • Kwok Wai Lai

Key players like Booker, Lopez, Bogdanovi, Scola, Kilpatrick, Harris and of course Lin are essential to the team chemistry. Losing anyone will be a big blow to the team. The team doesn’t have too much depth in every position.

    Scattered thoughts after Piston game:

    1) I think Piston game is a perfect example that KA’s coaching is working. I didn’t expect Lin get injured so soon (sad for me and fnas). But this is exactly why KA helps and empowers those bench/young players. If they didn’t play through tough games like Bulls game, I am not so sure if they can get this win.

    2) Lin’s injury – After last embarrassing loss, Lin played super focused and intense in this game.Just looked at the layup Lin missed, he was trying too hard IMO. If you ever play sports, you would understand. when you are super intense or super tired, you become injury prone.

    3) Lin’s role on this team is way bigger than what fans imagined, KA’s system basically asks Lin to sacrifice his game to help the whole team grow. Both of them are figuring out the balance in between. KA might not be a super smart coach, but he is a wise coach. He is preparing for the future. He has a clear vision.

    4) Lin gets superstar treatment – I don’t recall I have ever seen any player was targeted by other teams like this. First, i couldn’t believe he was heavily guarded in preseason games. Second, in Heats game, with 20 pts advantage, Rondo guarded Lin like Nets are winning. I was laughing… I guess Lin got reputation to come back from 20 pts deficit. lol.

Last win was still a little bit lucky because their shots were falling. But at least, if they can win winnable games and develop players in those losing games, I would say that’s a big success. Hats off to the coach. I am happy to continue to learn his coaching style.

Hope Lin will be back soon and do more wonders!

  • Win

A little thoughts about this game.

    1) The Nets really need Lin
    2) Klip is da man who should start, if not at least around 30ish minutes per game.
    3) Still think KA should sub Brook in a little earlier. But played Brook 29 minutes was an improvement on his weird coaching.
    4) Bottom line is, I don’t mind the motion offense, I have no problem with our roster, as long as KA play our best players 30 minutes per game and compete night in and night out, that’s good enough for me.

    Go Nets!!!!

I’m not sure these 2 can be recorded as assist because it took the player some times after the receiving the ball from Lin…

I may be wrong on that, but they don’t look like what could be seen as assist.

    So funny….

Both of them are so cute. Love their relationship as teammates. Lopez seems to be a really nice guy.

  • Rick James

reminds me of Lin + Parsons back in the day, though that relationship kind of got gross after a while

  • Maknusia

    lol…

  • KHuang

Booker is like Lebron minus the dunks, scoring, rebounds, defense, passing, dribbling, etc…

  • Dan cohen

parson didn’t have max contract yet and nor was he a ‘star’.. so of course he want to piggy back on linna in a waya.

Brook is already a proven star and has bigger contract than lin.. so that’s different.

  • CJSHYY

More like Lin & Filed to me. No Parsons….

  • heart

Parsons is arrogant. Lopez is likeable and seems very honest. He’s like a ‘big’ kid at heart which is like Lin.

Giving how Lopez destroyed Drummond who is one of the best defensive Center in the league, I would expect Lopez to destroy Corey Zeller, who is smaller than Drummond.

  • webattorney

Don’t know how old Sean Kilp is, but his jumper shooting motion is better than Lin’s. Looks very fluid and reliable. I think he can fill in for Lin without any problem. I don’t even see that much athleticism in Whitehead.

  • Maknusia

hamstring strain are lingering pain…hard to say…just need to stretch and monitor

  • Click Click

SK6 is 26 years old, 2 years younger than Lin.

I don’t understand why you and some other posters love bashing RHJ and Whitehead. These guys are rookies (RHJ only played 29 games last year). No rookie, unless they’re a lotto pick (and sometimes not even them), are NBA-ready… especially not PGs like Whitehead. It takes years to develop rookies. Lin was trash in his rookie year too and he was never given a chance to develop. It’s because the Warriors and Rockets dismissed Lin like you and others are dismissing RHJ and Whitehead, that he was almost out of the NBA before his career was given a chance to take off.

Nets / Marks / Atkinson won’t give up on these players as easily as some of you reactionary fans.

  • grover chang

Parson did seem kind of like a user. But I do give him credit for going to Taiwan and helping Lin with his basketball camp. That was still a nice gesture and I was a little surprised he did help out.

Skilpatrick is not a PG. He’s a SG. He’s not used to PG duties in the NBA. He can take over PG in an emergency like last night and probably the next game, but we really need Lin, Vasquez, and/or Foye back.

No announcement on Lin’s injury yet. But this makes sense.
1-game rest would give 5-day break for precautionary measures.
Tough for some of us who bought tix to watch Hornets vs Nets but if it’s 1-game rest, it’s better than 5-6 games that Foye has had so far.

Nothing official, just my perspective. Doubt Jeremy Lin plays tomorrow. Nets don’t play until Tuesday, which would give him a 5-day break.

SKil said he has played the point in he Summer League so it might be possible to start SKil instead of Whitehead, especially guarding Kemba in the next game. IMO It’s too much pressure to start Whitehead as a rookie.

I won’t be surprised if Coach KA starts SKil

Atkinson knows that this is an issue, but he continues to instill confidence in his young guys. The players know they have to step up to help the issue. One is Sean Kilpatrick, who’s stepped up nicely in different ways thus far. We saw him fill the one role Monday and Wednesday.

“I noticed as soon as Jeremy went out,” Kilpatrick said. “I was like, ‘I’m going to have to play the point’ because that was something I did throughout Summer League and Coach did a great job during the summer, making sure that I played the point because you never know when that time is going to come.”

    Great find.

The Nets have THE BEST shooting rotation in the entire NBA.

Bogdanovic, Harris, and Kilpatrick are each playing fantastic two way basketball.

I’d take the Nets SG rotation over any other SG rotation in the NBA.

  • Grace

Who was the poster suggesting we trade Brook Lopez for Hawes? Come on, don’t be shy.

  • Grace

    1) The problem with KA’s coaching is that he puts way too much higher priority on development at the expense of winning. He gives Whitehead equal minutes to Lin to start and throughout the game which tends to result in a blowout. Once the game is out of reach, Lin gets benched for good. If the Nets fall out of playoff contention, that will be a disaster for Lin, his veteran teammates, the fans, etc. Everyone loses really as it will be more difficult to use their large cap space for attracting quality free agents. Why Kenny and Marks don’t see this is a mystery.

Kenny should let Lin play more minutes and build up a solid lead before subbing in Whitehead. At least that way the Nets are playing downhill and it will be easier for them to maintain the lead. That way you get wins and development. They are not mutually exclusive.

    4) Lin is definitely not getting superstar treatment from the refs. They are determined to torment him with bogus calls like traveling when he did no such thing. Compare how LeBron is treated:

“Phil Jackson says LeBron James travels every other time he catches the basketball.”

  • aggressiveplayer

Just as I suspected. I don’t know why everyone didn’t really seem to be worried. Being out for 2+ weeks is absolutely devastating to this team.

  • takeme2cruz

Worry or not, there is nothing anyone could do.

  • Dan cohen

And they were about to gel together too. man.

Now imagine nets went on a winning streak without him, that wil not be good for him.
I knew it. I always worried he will get hurt. But 2 weeks.. say it’s only 2 weeks.. he has tomorrows game and then min. .that’s 5 days rest.. that is like missing 5 games. total..assuming it’s only 2 wks.

  • sws94

I’m ok. It’s a big loss for the Nets but in the big picture, it’s not an injury that has Lin out for months thankfully. Hopefully Foye will be back soon and give the Nets a chance. 2 weeks is something like 5 -7 games, I didn’t check the schedule.

  • takeme2cruz

If they can win without him then it should be good.

  • Dan cohen

yes he can.. he tweak it by turning awkwardly passing out to the 3 pointer line..

I’m thinking.. you could’ve just shoot it..as lanes wasn’t that clogged and then he won’t have this happen

  • CJSHYY

I don’t think Nets will have winning streak…. just hope don’t lose too many games…

  • Dan cohen

    why

  • takeme2cruz

Why not? It’s a long season and they need to be in playoff race.

  • sws94

No, injuries happen. He made the right basketball play.

  • takeme2cruz

It happened many times in the past years, this time….well.

  • Dan cohen

then that means they are gelling and can win without needing lin which is ironic to what this site is all about.

if they gel, and then he comes back in, it will take time to gel too. so it’s like disrupting the gelling. That’s why I alwasy see when teams have their superstar back, it somehow messes up the gelling

  • spiderman

A great opportunity for teammates to step up and “develop”

  • takeme2cruz

That’s better if they are gelled. LIn will take them to the next level when they rejoining.

  • aggressiveplayer

I’m not ok. Without Lin I’m not sure what sort of chances this team has. We could easily end up being 3-9 or something like that and we’ll have a lot of catch up work to do.

  • Dan cohen

    ka’s dream

  • Dan cohen

ok. what if it was 9-3.. you will be scare too because it means lin is not needed no? or that they were gelling and anytime a person who was not part of da gel disrupts the gel.

    damage control

  • aggressiveplayer

If we were 9-3 without Lin, which is very unlikely, then with Lin we should be 73-9

  • Rick James

I DID mention this earlier to all the people claiming 40+ win season. All it takes is ONE injury to lin, and its good night nets. Well, at least when Lin comes back, it will be like return of rocky.

  • Dan cohen

    there is lopez.. you forgot.

  • Dan cohen

ok, that’s one way of looking at it.

  • CJSHYY
  • sws94

Not much they can do about that but try to play their best. Lin will give advice on the sidelines to the team. He’s still the leader, but he won’t be able to do it on the court for 2 weeks plus. I just hope it isn’t more than 2 weeks.

  • aggressiveplayer

I knew we were going to get a fair share of injuries, which is why I was hesitant on predicting 40 or more. But now I know it’s going to be a very, very, tough road ahead if we want 40+

  • aggressiveplayer

Same. I hope maybe a silver lining can come out of this, like Whitehead being an absolute stunner.

  • heart

We’re still shocked over the news. That’s why I always asked people to pray for Lin every game. But everything happens for a reason, we’ll have to hope. At least it’s early in the season…

  • aggressiveplayer

I pray that he’ll have an early return.. Please basketball gods…..

  • heart

Amen. I pray that he’s fully recovered and he will come back stronger than before. Amen!

  • Rick James

your thinking is flawed. If the nets somehow end up winning without lin, then thats GOOD, because that means Lin has a team that can actually support him. Of course, we saw how badly the nets were getting wooped yesterday against pistons in 2nd half. Booker had to bail out the team TWICE in the last minute with some crazy lebron james defensive plays. If not for that, then the pistons would have caught up or won the game. Im not a betting guy, but I would NOT bet on the prospect that nets do better without lin, not even a longshot.

  • takeme2cruz

The number was assuming he’s healthy. Got it?

  • gandychan

Ugh! Flying out to NYC tonight from Seattle. Bought the flight just to watch the charlotte game. What a friggin waste of a thousand dollars! This is BS!

  • heart

So sad hearing about Lin’s news. We need to send our prayers up for Lin for a speedy recovery. Hopefully No other procedures needed. God forbid! Once Lin comes back, we will pray for him and his teammates before each game wholeheartedly again. An opportunity has arisen for diamond in a rough to show up. I truly hope SKilpatrick is the man. Lopez needs to lead the scoring like he did last night, then maybe Nets have a chance to hold down the fort until Lin returns.

  • CJSHYY

    Can you change the schedule?

  • takeme2cruz

I’m a big Jeremy lin fan, but I still think thousand dollars for that still a waste of money even if lin would play.

  • heart

Sorry to hear that. Hope you have ticket insurance to save your ticket for future travel.

  • Is this your first time out in NYC? There’s a LOT more to the city than just Jeremy Lin. The Nets will still battle hard and Jeremy will be on the bench. If you have lower level seats you can try to arrive really early (like 2 hours before tip off) and try to talk to some of the players, maybe Lin.

Also tons to do as a tourist in the city and the weather is surprisingly very warm right now for this time of the year.

  • Spot

This could be an opportunity for Kilpatrick to show how good he is.

This team, if play as a team, can be good.

Jeremy can have different perceptions from the bench and know better his teammates.

It’s not the end of the world and keep remember God works for the good who believes in Him.

    Have faith.

  • Spot

I think you’d still have a chance to meet Jeremy if you go to a Nets’ match.

    Ask around or send mails

  • David Kim

I hope nets can win some games while Lin out..

  • CJSHYY
  • BobbyH

I respect full right of the author, 🙂

  • zxcvb

This is pretty crushing. Lin was playing great in his limited minutes and now the Nets could go 0-7 despite having totally winnable games in the next 2 weeks. I hope there’s some “Patrick Ewing Effect” and they go at least 2-5.

I guess we should be thankful it’s only 2-3 weeks and not something worse.

  • Rick James

    lol…

  • gandychan

I’ve been many times before. I was just really excited to see him play. Don’t really need to meet him.

  • gandychan

Nope. It was a nonrefundable ticket. =(

  • aggressiveplayer

I guess on the bright side of the Lin injury.. like Atkinson said, this is the beauty. Now we’ll get to see who can step up (if anyone)

  • kauaiblue

What happened? 2 weeks for a hamstring? Was it a bad strain?

  • heart

This is my estimation based on the news at face value. Things can change, but this is what we’re looking at right now. Lin might miss these games:
Nov 4, vs Hornets @ Home
Nov 8, vs Wolves @ Home
Nov 9, vs Knicks @ Away
Nov 12, vs Suns @ Away
Nov 14, vs Clippers @ Away
Nov 15, vs Lakers @ Away
Nov 18, vs Thunders @ Away
Re-evaluation and if everything is healed and medically cleared, then he might be able to return on:
Nov 20, vs Blazers @ Home

  • psalm234

It’s tough to swallow but in hindsight, it’s better for Lin to rest 5-6 games than having lingering injury throughout the season.
If the Nets can win 2-3 games (Wolves, Suns, Lakers), that would be the best scenario.

You mentioned that you blame the Nets training staff. The Nets training FACILITY is tightly linked to the Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS) which I know is one of the best centers for sports medicine in the country. Are you saying the Nets trainers are independent of the HSS and their doctors?

  • sws94

That’s what I mean by Lin’s injury isn’t devastating. 2 weeks is disappointing, it’s disappointing if he misses one game. But 2 weeks out of a season is not that long compared to what some other players are going through. Just hope it’s only 2 weeks.

  • aggressiveplayer

If Whitehead breaks out and Lin and LeVert is back, we’re going full steam ahead.

Someone posted this information on reddit.

Timeframes for rehabilitation and return to sport vary depending on the nature and severity of the strain. As a general rule, Grade 1 hamstring strains should be rested from sporting activity for about three weeks and Grade 2 injuries for a minimum of four to eight weeks.

Can’t do anything about it, but I’d definitely rather have Lin rest 3 weeks than a chance for reinjury.

  • heart

Or Sean Kilpatrick or any guys who can make an impact to win games. It’s really an opportunity if we look at it positively. By the time Lin rejoins the team, KA’s coaching and his teammates should be better than before. Just hope that Lin’s injury is minor and just needs healing time.

Interestingly, the Director of Physical Therapy for the Nets, Aisling Toolan, used to work at HSS :

Aisling Toolan joins the Nets after spending the past five years as a physical therapist at the Hospital for Special Surgery Rehabilitation and Performance Center. In addition, Toolan served as the physical therapist for NYCFC during the 2015 MLS season. In 2014, Toolan completed a rotation at the U.S. Olympic Training Center, where she worked with National Team gymnasts, fencers, wrestlers and weightlifters. Toolan received her Bachelor of Science degree in physiotherapy from Trinity College in Dublin, Ireland, and her Doctorate of Physical Therapy from Stony Brook University. The former Irish international soccer player and native of Dublin is also a board certified clinical specialist in sports physical therapy.

  • emz

Honestly though, think about it, it’s not like Lin is going to just go AWOL when he’s injured. I’m betting that he’s going to show up to every practice and game even if the team performance staff is barring him from activity/contact, watching film and *personally* coaching Skil and Whitehead like we saw a little of during the game.

What this means? Lin is focused on the team’s development like another coach, thus super-powering the bench’s development so that when average sportsviewers tune in around late December (honestly most people are still talking baseball and football right now) the Nets actually have a functional bench. Think of how amazing this would be to both the team in general AND to resting Lin enough during the game so that he can go off in the 4th quarter without having to fight back from a large deficit.

Good article on hamstring injury (related to CP3 hamstring injury in the last playoff)

Beware the hamstring injury, tormentor of Chris Paul and many others

Hamstring comes from the old English “hamm,” meaning thigh. String refers to the tendons above the back of the knee. Go ahead, reach behind your leg and squeeze. Hello, hamstrings — the same muscles that burn a little after a hike.

But even in the mildest cases, they can be a ribbon of hurt.

The reason injuries happen so frequently is because tendons cross both the hip and the knee, making them prone to over-lengthening, said Dr. Seth Gamradt, an orthopedic specialist at USC’s Keck Medical Center.

A rubber band can stretch only so far, and so it is with hamstrings. Typically, such strains are mid-thigh, Gamradt said, and an MRI is used to gauge severity. When bleeding occurs, the back of the leg blossoms into a big, Bible-colored bruise.

According to experts, it’s not merely a matter of flexibility, but also strength. The front thigh muscle might be significantly stronger than the hamstring, too demanding for its counterweight in the back.

An athlete’s right leg might be stronger than the left, prompting overwork on one side.

A study of soccer players showed that those with stronger hamstrings were less likely to suffer injuries, Gamradt said. That may be one of the reasons the NFL and NBA see more hamstring injuries early in the season, when muscles aren’t at their peak power.

For example, Giants wideout Odell Beckham Jr. missed the first four games of his sensational 2014 season with hamstring issues.

Inadequate stretching during warmups is also a frequent factor in hamstring injuries, as are fatigue and dehydration.

Once the injury happens, “It’s one of those things doctors can’t do a lot for,” Gamradt said.

    Ice. Elevation. Advil.

Many times, medical personnel will inject the area with platelet-rich plasma. The gin in the martini, the platelets promote muscle regeneration and healing.

Trainers usually insist that an injured athlete continue a range of motion to reduce the chances of scar tissue and fiber weaknesses further down the line.

“There’s no foolproof way to prevent them,” Gamradt said.

Whitehead is tough defending a player 50 pounds more than him. This kid needs time to develop. Brook Lopez needs development too. Lin also needs development and he can use sometime to think about his style of playing to prolong his career.

  • psalm234

Missing 2-3 weeks is definitely a bummer but it is definitely better to have Lin properly healed.
Otherwise the potential risk of reinjury is quite high up to 31% 🙁
We don’t want it to be a chronic injury for Lin throughout the season or his career.

Yes. HSS is not doing day-to-day conditioning. They do surgery and testing for possible surgery.

Trainers screwed up. Lin has never had hamstring strains before. And just 4.5 games in, he’s not alone — Foye had one too. And Vasquez reinjured his ankle.

The staff Marks brought in doesn’t seem to have proper experience — I saw how young and “unorthodox” they are (e.g. the Navy SEAL guy).

  • zxcvb

He had a drive and a layup soon afterward, so it can’t be that bad. 2-3 weeks should heal it fully.

  • blueCypher

Ok, i didnt realize he made those plays after the injury.

Non combattons often don’t understand the equation to gauge match toughness and endurance. The truth has been tested by science that human capacity has defined limits. Beyond that, there is no second wind as many athletes falsely believe. What it is is just mental toughness forcing the body to work believing that it’s still at peak performance. ABSOLUTELY FALSE! Once you reach your athletic threshold of training, you are in the danger zone.

What we are witnessing is the recognition of what sports psychologist call ” resource management”, ( this applies to business as well btw, lost productivity of key staff members can create big time problems ). It’s not by accident that other coaches have begun to bench stars to protect them from exhaustion that often lead to injuries.

Pop was definately on the cutting edge for this management skill. He managed to prolong Duncan’s and other key players careers by limiting play time BY DEVELOPMENT OF A STRONG BENCH. was it happy accident? Maybe…but give him credit for extending the careers of some of the greatest players of the game.

Lin like most athletes always feel bulletproof and would play until they drop. Linsanity was stopped when he played himself out of that year’s playoffs. Just like the GSWs last year, winning for the sake of winning is stupid and self destructive. Only great coaches know when to throw games to “lose the battle in order to win the war”.

KA has received criticism for limiting Jin’s and Lopez minutes to avoid just this kind of thing. Got lots of criticism for it too. This will be a good opportunity so see how good KA is as a coach with very limited talent and to see how good Brook Lopez can be when he is now the leader. Kind of looking forward to this time to see how it plays out though it if weren’t for JLin I would not follow BKN. For that matter I probably wouldn’t follow the NBA anymore either!

It will be a good opportunity and test for The Nets for next two weeks without JLin7. I believe in coach KA and this team that they can go 3-3 or 2-4 at least.

  • ZcodeSportSystem.com

Just woke up from bed and heard the news of Lin missing 2 weeks…I’m so sad about this because it is so early and I wanted Lin to really get an early start of good play and statistics…Now, we are all forced to wait at least 2 weeks just to get re-evaluated.

That really sucks..Knowing the Nets, they will keep him out an extra 1-2 week just so that they can give more time to Whitehead and other guys…Perfect excuse to do development as they’ve been yapping about.

I expect t Brook Lopez to miss games for resting.

As long as Kenny let’s Lopez do his thing and the players that Nets have now can play around Lopez vs the players last year. Nets still have a chance to go 3-3. I still believe Lin would have been in better game shape if Atkinson would have let him play his brand of ball earlier in the regular season, even more so in preseason. Let’s see Whitehead step up and Kilpatrick will do good enough at the point if needed to setup Lopez. I do like Whitehead. He plays aggressive on the defensive side, but plays offense like he is reacting to defense instead of taking control of offense. Whitehead will get his chance and I think he’ll step up and have a breakout game.

well, Global Warming is a taboo subject especially in the US. It has morphed into a political issue for many people, which is honestly strange for a scientific theory.

I don’t blame Lin or any other athlete for driving luxury vehicles. They fly around on a daily basis in jet planes and pollute 100s of times more than regular people. It would be hypocritical of them to suddenly jump into a tesla or other electric car. It is also much easier to support something that has broad support behind it rather than to pick up the courage to stand behind ones principles and beliefs as a lone man on an island. For someone like Lin, the amount of haters he would get by publicly voicing support for global warming would jump multiple fold, and possibly crush his career. There are likely many athletes and celebrities who are concerned but are afraid of the backlash. Currently the hate against global warming is stronger that it is for the BLM movement, which itself says something.

It is similar to how politicians didn’t support gays 10 years ago, but all of a sudden they publicly support them once broad base pop culture shifted.

Some more detail for $2.3M bonus incentives in Lin’s contract
“Lin has bonuses for All-NBA honors and 61 games, along with statistical achievements.”

  • psalm234

    More statistics-based bonus

    Statistics-based bonuses
A calculator will be needed to figure out Lin’s incentives.

The point guard has bonuses for All-NBA honors, but also has three sets of incentives for games played, assists, turnovers, three-point percentage, three-pointers attempted and free throws attempted per 36 minutes.

Though each bonus was deemed unlikely by the NBA based on Lin’s statistics in Charlotte last season, the Nets starter could be in line for an additional $750,000 based on his solid start this year but he is battling a hamstring injury now.

  • Maknusia

The other thing that players need is upon physical recovery is the mental recovery as well. Hamstring injury could be very psychological as well….where the body would go into protective mode so that reinjury does not occur. Hence coming back into game might be slow, and many would loose the confidence to burst as normal

  • Maknusia

lol….its always easier to throw a blame….injury such as this happens in all sport, and it has very little to do with trainers when it comes to professional players. Senior Pro players, are have sound knowledge on their body, nutrition and physical conditioning.

Like you said, a “theory”. Not a fact a theory. Should we re-arrange society based on this theory? What if this theory of the earth getting warmer is not true and in fact is getting colder? There is quite a bit of science and history that supports a coming long cold spell. Right now the sun is at its lowest output in year. This theory is support by some scientific fact and by scientists. But it is also a theory that is contested by scientific fact and many scientists

Yes announcers did a replay and said a player hit the board and it should’ve counted!

Lin was playing very well in 1st half. I tried avoid this site and the results until I watched the game. Sad that he strained his hamstring hope he’s ok. If he comes back I hope it doesn’t affect his shooting. The Nets played as if they were still facing the Bulls and maybe it was a bit too much. Sean Kilpatrick was on fire. Again why isn’t this guy starting? RHJ was ineffective he should not be starting.

Lopez was on fire and showed off his versatility even more, post ups, step back mid jumper, 3s. He was so efficient and almost every shot went in. His post moves are very quick and smart. I have to say besides Lin, Lopez is the most entertaining to watch so far.

I’m glad coach made adjustments and stagger Lin and Lopez to lead the bench (which we also discussed here). Looks like KA finally found the balance for Lopez’s offense and not just stand at the 3 point line. Lopez can do anything it’d be waste for him to just camp beyond the arc. The Nets are finally playing as a team just hope Lin is ok and heals soon.

I saw Kilpatrick (SG) being “PG” with the 2nd unit. I’m glad many of the adjustments he asked for were happening during Pistons game. It’s really a bad time for Lin to be injured when the team finally starts clicking and he was playing so well.

  • Rick James

A scientific theory is a well-substantiated explanation of some aspect of the natural world, based on a body of facts that have been repeatedly confirmed through observation and experiment. Such fact-supported theories are not “guesses” but reliable accounts of the real world. —Wikipedia

    Some famous scientific theories:
    1)Heliocentrism: Copernicus, 1543
2)Evolution by natural selection: Charles Darwin, 1859
3)Quantum theory: Max Planck, Einstein, Niels Bohr, Werner Heisenberg, Erwin Schrödinger, Max Born, Paul Dirac, 1900–1926
    4)General relativity: Einstein, 1915
    5)Special relativity: Albert Einstein, 1905

I can go on. These are all theories as well.

KD is Smoking Hot!!! He’s HOTTER than SC30 – 24pt in 15min. This the BEST scoring offense, I think.

  • Barry Allen

Yeah, the problem will be their inside presence. They will really miss Bogut.

  • Steppen03

Yeah, but they’re very good at Team defense. I really don’t think that’s gonna be a problem. They will outscore you and it’s not easy to catch up because of their D. KD will help tremendously when come playoffs time. They will have luxury to take break from “off-shooting” nights.

  • Barry Allen

I’m sure they will figure it out.

  • Steppen03

I like SC30 and KD – there’ll be No easy way of leaving OKC (like LBJ for Cavs). But KD did it better than LBJ – not having it televised and all… Sure, KD could’ve handled it even more better. We really don’t know what’s behind the scenes. It’s his choice and it does make sense – don’t want another 2-3 years chasing the WCF with Russ & OKC…. He’s joined a better team. A place that he want to be. Can’t I blame him ? Just like players want more $$ contracts – but he gave that up …

  • Steppen03

People saying KD joined a team that “beats” them. Well, of course. I’ll be puzzled if he joined a team that’s less talented than OKC. He wanted to win in his prime… That’s naturally.

When you see RHJ is ranked higher than Trevor Brooker, you can throw the ranking staff of ESPN into the Atlantic. T Brooker is playing at PER of 17.7 while RHJ at 0.92.

What kind of sick joke is ESPN making?

  • ZcodeSportSystem.com

My sense is this is based on earlier assumption that RHJ was going to improve.

The way RHJ has been playing, he probably shouldn’t even be in an NBA team…I’ve seen much more from PJ Hairston during last year campaign with Charlotte Hornets.

There does seem to be a pattern where KA only wins home games and loses road games with motion offense. But with Lin out it’s hard to say what he will do. I just hope they win most of the games when Lin is away. If they play like yesterday they will be fine. KA no longer has the leisure to experiment, bench, or go away from Lopez’s strengths. PS I won’t be watching game without Lin as well.

Please help me complete the list of coaches that Lin has ever had.

Polo Alto High School coach Peter Diepenbrock
    Harvard assistant coach Bill Holden,
    Harvard head coach Tommy Amaker
    Keith Smart
    Reno Bighorns coach Eric Musselman
Mark Jackson (in name only; Lin has never played for him but got waived)
    Mike D’Antoni
    Mike Woodson
    Assistant coach Kenny Atkinson
    Kevin McHale
    Byron Scott
    Steve Clifford

Byron Scott seems to be the worst; an almost career ending coach for players.

    KEY OF THE GAME:
1 After scoring only 38pts in the 2nd half of Pistons game without JLin, who will be the point guard to manage the offensive flow?
2 The Nets might have to simplify the game to rely on on Brook Lopez scoring more but it might not be Coach Atkinson’s game plan to overwork Lopez who has plantar fascitis.
3 The Nets would need a great 3pt shooting performance from Kilpatrick, Brook, Bojan, Harris to have a chance in this game.
4 Lin might have to dig deep to mentor Kilpatrick and Whitehead to play point guard positions.
