G57 MIL @LAL PreGame Thread+Poll

It seemed that Price’s absence made Jeremy be more a facilitator than an aggressor in the Utah game, similar to how Byron asked him to play in the 1st half of the season. Perhaps Lin wasn’t 100% healthy as some saw he took some (pain-reliever?) pills

Will Jeremy find a way to be his aggressive self as in the BKN and BOS games?

Will it be the only chance for the 2nd Linsanity game in LA as Byron has to consider the tanking goal not to fall out of the Bottom 4?

Let’s hope so since it might be one of the few games that Byron Scott really wants to win to exact revenge against Jason Kidd who had a hand in getting him fired from as a NJ Nets coach.

  • I voted for “2nd LINSANITY in LA!”
    Yeah!

  • IsabeliJane*17

I don’t care much about what his stats may be. I just want him to be the game closer and to play more minutes. Oh well…

  • dave lam

    I am doing some calculations
If the Lakers finish last or 2nd last they are guarantee top 5 pick
If Lakers finish 3rd last then have a 96% probability of getting a top 5 pick
If the Lakers finish 4th last then the chance of getting a top five is 83%
if Lakers finish 5th last then the probability lowers to 55%.

  • John Lee

Currently the Lakers are sitting on a comfy 4th at 83%, though 3rd at 94% would be a LOT more reassuring after wasting an entire season amidst controversy and fan resentment.

  • Kwok Wai Lai

OKC vs Phoenix – a must win for the Suns.
    Suns leading 9-0

  • Kwok Wai Lai

I bet PFV would tell us that Jeremy controlled the tempo in the 4Q.

  • John Lee

I hope OKC wins so Westy has a chance to school Bev in the playoffs, and Bledsoe can sit at home in May watching others play. Love Hornacek, but hate overrated Bledsoe.

  • Kwok Wai Lai

    14:4 advantage Suns.
Again this is a must win for the Suns if they want a chance to the playoff.

I am sure when the season winds down. FO wants to finish 2nd last or 3rd last and we see tanking more evident. Problem is 76ers and Knicks tanking better than Lakers. Timberwolves seem to be playing better with Garnet back and trading away some players so I think Lakers might be able to finish 3rd last

Finishing 5th last is like a coin flip for top five pick. I sure FO will not be happy to finish 5th last

  • Kwok Wai Lai

He said that Jeremy played better in the 4thQ

    Yes.

Lin hater logic: 8 pts in 18 min on 2-14 FGA in first half…INCONSISTENT!!!

Oh wait, those are Russel Westbrook’s numbers from the Suns game…that’s OK then, nothing to see here. LOL

Suns are good. OKC … too much on Westy …

  • Brent Yen

Man the spacing SUNs have is just ridiculous…..and Dragic gave up that…

  • Brent Yen

RWB improved a lot actually….king of impressed…still not enough for a PG tho

  • JoeTeam

great game. That dunk by Tucker was beautiful. Wright to Tucker (?) earlier was beautiful too.

  • Brent Yen

Reggie Miller again saying something that does not make sense…there is no vision involved…IBAKA WAS RIGHT IN FRONT OF RWB…and it was a good play

  • JoeTeam

Wow, announcer Harlan sounds just Like Marv Albert.

oh, figured it out “kind of impressed”

Yes, RWB seems to be able to penetrate at will. I was impressed with Bledsoe’s hesitation blow-by. He did it 2x I saw tonight and had a wide open run to basket.

  • Brent Yen

    He made more correct reads…..

  • JoeTeam

OT, this one should be fun.

    LOL….sun brain farted with a foul…..

  • JoeTeam

yeah really, Tuckaz! good player, should have let Westy have it.

  • JoeTeam

    wow, Westbrook 11 of 34. ….

In OT…..OKC completely went back to their old selves….so bad…

  • Brent Yen

Man…there is no PG on both teams I guess…

  • LOL, Westbrook needs to learn reverse layup from Lin =)

  • JoeTeam

    I like the outcome.

  • Brent Yen

That was the most bone-headed layup I have ever saw from a PG…

  • JoeTeam

(excuse – he hurt his ankle on the way up) The under basket cam was telling. Tucker foul in regulation was more boneheaded.

  • Brent Yen

Suddenly I felt all Lin’s missed layup were ok…

  • JoeTeam

only if you are being fair, Brent.

  • Brent Yen

I never was,,,I am a LIN FAN!!! LOL

  • JoeTeam

What I mean is, most LFs and nonLFs think Lin has to be 100%, so I guess so …

  • Brent Yen

Haha….I really do not know why it is like that….who makes shots every time? It is even harder to have the same FG% every game, especially when you only take about 8 shots per game…

  • JoeTeam

… we need perfect heroes … clutch every time! WW of Sports ‘agony of defeat’ was what kept a generation realistic … we didn’t have ESPN.

These days it’s all about serving the ‘self’ (selfies, FB friends, etc.) don’t need to be real.

Next year, I want Lin to move to Eastern Conf.

    This year splits (per-36 stats)
    WC: 14.1 pts, 6.3 ast, 3.4 tov, 42.6% fg, 34.1% 3pt, 52.4% ts
    EC: 16.6 pts, 6.5 ast, 2.9 tov, 44.9% fg, 38.5% 3pt, 56.9% ts

  • JLin Fan from Australia

Just checked Westbrook was 12-38 3PM-A 1-10 FTM-A 14-16 39pts in 42:30min. Wish JLIn is allowed to shoot just half of it and he will have a better result than Westbrook.

  • Brent Yen

yes nothing to see here. how bout harden previous nite. 0 points first quarter on 0 for 8 i think. nothing to see there either. both those guys could be mvp. or so says the announcers.

running thru some simple statistics for the season; not complex analytics that are often arbitrary and intangible for the most part but simple things like games played, minutes played per game, points scored per game, assists per game, turnovers per game, shooting % in all 3 categories of fg, 3pt fg and ft.

using those 8 categories and setting minimum limits of at least 50 games played–

(what started this inquiry was my shocking discovery that in major league baseball in the last two years only one player has played every game; the nba season now most teams approaching 60 games played to me the most important qualifier for a player was that he was there to play.)

–so taking a minimum of 50 games played, 25 minutes per game (to eliminate players who don’t have significant minutes per game), double digit scoring per game, 4 assists per game, 2.5 or less turnovers per game, 43% shooting, 35% shooting from 3 and 75% shooting ft.

only 4 nba point guards this season can meet those standards:

    here’s who they are:

chris paul,, kyrie irving, mike conley, and (wait for it)..

    yes jeremy lin.

despite having a “bad season”. benched twice for inferior players, instructed to play a game that diminishes both his value and the teams chances of winning; when it comes to the basic’s that matter.

lin and only lin shows up with the “stars”.

interestingly other than the games played/minutes played provision (only 18 point guards in the nba meet that requirement this season) the categories that eliminate most other higher rated pgs that lin meets are the ones that lin is most often criticized for ie. fg % and turnovers.

late note: only 3 pg’s average in double figures despite playing less than 28 minutes a game; lin brooks and augustin. players similar in that given the opportunity they produce but most often remain viewed as bench players. with brooks and augustin perhaps can be attributed to their diminutive stature making them questionable as having the size to defend.

as for lin…well you probably have your own thoughts as to why.

  • you mean this one?
I keep switching between ‘black&blue’ and ‘white&gold” every 2 hrs.

Interesting, balanced article on analytics by Howard Beck. He spoke to a panel that included RC Buford (Spurs’ GM), Mark Cuban, John Hollinger, Daryl Morey, Ben Alamar (ESPN) and others.

“Forward-thinking coaches have always explored new ways to analyze and attack the game, to test their hypotheses against any available data. There is simply more data than ever available now, and a more intensive effort to harness it. That’s what statistical analysis is really about.”

  • real-dsb

I don’t mind if this article gets reposted 100 times here. It is what we’ve all been saying on this forum for a long time. Scott and the Lakers are outdated dinosaurs. My favorite excerpts from the article:

“[Byron Scott] told us a couple stats,” Lin said, “But besides that, I haven’t seen that much.”

Ben Alamar, director of production analytics at ESPN: “they haven’t hired anybody that anybody has respect for in the analytics community.” His point was echoed by several analytics officials employed by NBA teams.

Interviews with those around the league and considerable evidence suggest that the Lakers’ progress with analytics matches their record his season: almost dead last.

Scott appeared particularly old school earlier this season when he said he didn’t believe that 3-pointers win championships. Indeed, the Lakers are 29th in 3-pointers made this season, attempting fewer per game than three of the past four NBA champions. This appears to be ignorant of massive changes in how coaches use the long ball. This season is on track to be the first in which, league-wide, 3s outnumber free throws.

“It’s hard for me to believe that they’re even close to fixing things right now, not given the results but given the way they’re making
decisions,” said Jeff Ma, a predictive analytics expert for ESPN who has worked as an analytics consultant for several NBA teams.

“There is no evidence that I’m aware of that suggests progressive thought, finding innovative ways to improve or progress the team — either in team construction/composition, or on-court play,” said one NBA analytics official.

Despite Madsen’s enthusiasm for the numbers, one analytics official familiar with the Lakers’ operation said that Madsen’s work is “not well-received” by Scott and the other coaches, and that any advanced stats the Lakers are using are “really, really basic.”

Scott said he receives analytics reports on a weekly basis. “It sits on my desk and I look at it for a little while,” he said.
“Then I take it to Mark Madsen and we’ll talk about it for a minute, and then I say ‘OK,’ and I take it from there.”

Scott was then asked if those meetings have resulted in any major changes this season. “No.”

  • linspiredinla
  • linspiredinla

    No Young tonight.

  • takemeback2reaganyears

I would even go further that I hope Lin will be out before March 1st.

  • linspiredinla

Scott added, “[Lin] hasn’t started in a while, so you almost tend to forget his body of work–those 15-20 games when he did start. So, I want to go back to that just to see how that looks, but I think he’s been better off the bench for us over all.”

  • Michael

    Selective memory relapse.

  • Brent Yen

So the BS logic is….”Lin is playing better as a bench, so I need to find a way to start him”…great! totally makes sense…

  • real-dsb

Yes, Lin’s Per 36 stats this year separated between WC and EC this year

  • real-dsb

  • Rick Johnson

More like he’s better without Kobe taking long contested 2’s, causing ball movement to get sticky and ball hogging. It’s not whether he starts or come off the bench, it’s Kobe.

  • Brent Yen

As long as Lin can keep the ball, I am ok with ZERO ball movement….LOL

  • CJSHYY

Ya! If Lin & Rondo can just switch the team before 3/1/15…But not going to happen I think… smh!

Yes, the per-36 and per-game diff is not much, but I feel the % are significant enough.
    42.6% fg, 34.1% 3pt, 52.4% ts is medicore.
    44.9% fg, 38.5% 3pt, 56.9% ts is excellent.
I think any other coach with a clue would make a 45%/39%/57% player the starter and give him 36 mins instead of 25 mins.

Which would give Lin 16 ppg, 6 apg instead of 10.6 ppg, 4.5 apg. That would put him in the top 10 of PGs.

I seen robot arms shooting foul shots 100% .on 100 tries..so it has to be feel.

  • Dan Cohen

well, for linsanity to happen now.. it means winning ALL and lin playing well and leading the game. And it gets to the playoffs.. THAT. IS. LINSANITY in 2015, because that’s linsane as in catching NBA news all the time. else 2 or 3 games is not linsanity now.. we know what he can do. To me, if he gets 20 and 10.. that is good..but not linsanity. if he gets 20 and 10 in 10 games consecutively and win.. THAT is also LINSANITY. To me, that term should be used when no other NBA players can do what he does.. (or the elite few).. such as one of the 5 players who has 1st 5 games of 25 and 7 assists ..and pull the knicks to contention.. that was LINSANITY. So far, 25 and 6 is still not linsanity to me.. it’s just one normal and should be normal game. Else we are all downgrading him to something because we are saying 20 and 10 is linsanity (insane) when all good nba player has that.

So lInsanity is a term that should be use for a duration of period where it caught nba crazed and he did performed at a level that few nba player can do AND win. at least to me.

The reporter bumped into Lin and told him that he watched the Linsanity movie on Netflix and that it was a great movie. He also ask Lin, “Who the heck is this Kobe guy? He treats his teammates worse than Tiger Mom treats her children.” They chatted about some other random topics such as playing basketball at the Palo Alto YMCA. Then Lin had to go, so the reporter told him, “Hey, great to see you, enjoy your last game.” Lin replied, “Hey, have a safe trip back home. Thank you so much.”

    LOL

  • takemeback2reaganyears

You can’t do that to joyce as she would hate to miss any Lin related news.

    Last paragragh:

While studying at USC, Professor of sports media told us, if you love a sport, do not dig inside the organization, it will ruin your passion. After being a NBA reporter for three years, it confirms the professor’s words, and like many of my peers, in the past few years, we grew tired of NBA gradually. But Lin, a simple, sincere, dedicated, sincere dreamer renews my love of NBA and basketball again.

  • JLin Fan from Australia

I know. I did try to translate the last paragraph. It’s done now:-) It is a very long article and will take a long time to translate:-)

  • JLin Fan from Australia

Just hope that some other posters will be able to do it:-)

  • grover chang

it is not the starters vs bench That makes Lin look good but ball stopper vs nonball stopper teammates. The three worse ball stoppers are Kobe, hill, young in that order

  • MoominFloren

Ah yeah this is the article I read last night. Very sincere. This is Lin we love.

And yes, Lin brings a lot of people back to NBA. Can you hear, Mr Silver? Please give Lin the right call!

  • grover chang

Scott is a tank genius. Surrounding Lin with ball stoppers. Lin will have to counter by making his teammates screeners and not receivers of the ball when he gets the ball

but what i was trying to say is i agree scott is a tank genius but some people just think he’s just a very bad coach, that he’s not intentionally “not prioritizing winning”–so genius or the opposite end of spectrum. not sure but either way the right man for the job.

  • G57 MIL @LAL Game Thread is open
    http://www.jlinportal.com/g57-mil-lal-game-thread/

Let’s hope for the 2nd Linsanity game since Byron wants to get a big W against Jason Kidd

    LINSANITY!!!

  • LAJane

    Great comment!

  • Linsanity certainly has different meanings to everyone.
We can certainly have our own understanding of what it means.

For me, the embodiment of Linsanity is “the thrill fans feel from watching beautiful teamwork driven by multiple Jeremy Lin aggressive drives to the basket”. When I ask myself what made people cheered in the BOS game, it was mostly the aggressive drives with 3 circus shots of And-1s that produced such exhilarating joy from the fans. The 3 assists in OT was timely although nothing like Novak’s wide open 3s off Lin’s drives will produce.

Now we will not have multiple LA winning streak like Lin did with the Knicks due to tanking. But any wins to produce such joyful reaction from fans would be the talk of the media and proves to many GMs that Linsanity is still alive but frozen under the weight of LA Lakers tanking ways. To me, these flashes of Linsanity is the most important for Lin’s summer FA. We only had one Linsanity game in BOS so another game would be so great!
